Affordable Solar Power Is Increasing Electricity Access for Malawi’s Households

In Malawi, the reduced cost of solar electricity is transforming lives by making power accessible even to low-income households. The World Bank’s Malawi Electricity Access Project (MEAP), via the Ngwee Ngwee Ngwee Fund, supports private sector-led off-grid solar initiatives, enabling over 140,000 households to gain electricity. Solar companies like Yellow Solar and Zuwa Energy offer affordable packages, helping families light their homes, charge phones, and enjoy radios. With a goal to connect 1.9 million people by June 2025, the project is crucial for areas far from the national grid, significantly enhancing daily life and education for many Malawians.
