Ethiopia’s coffee industry has seen impressive growth, with exports generating $1.2 billion over the past 11 months from 252,446 tons of coffee, per the Coffee and Tea Authority. Director General Adugna Debela highlighted May 2024’s performance, where 43,481 tons were shipped, earning $209.5 million and surpassing targets. With Europe accounting for 30% of sales, the upcoming EU Deforestation-Free Regulation poses a challenge, potentially impacting revenues. Ethiopia is expanding its market reach through international coffee fairs and has reduced shipping costs to the Middle East and Asia via Ethiopian Airlines to $1.5 per kilogram to boost exports. Authorities remain optimistic about surpassing past revenue records.
