In March 2024, the OR Tambo International Airport SEZ Precinct 1 officially opened, marking the completion of its development. This milestone, celebrated with key government leaders and stakeholders, highlights the SEZ’s role in South Africa’s mineral beneficiation strategy. Since 2018, the precinct has grown to include a diverse ultra-fresh food facility, a precious metals refinery, and a dynamic Jewelry and Diamond Manufacturing Cluster. The SEZ supports over 2,500 jobs and fosters collaboration among 19 companies, regulatory agencies, and service providers. With Precinct 1 complete, focus shifts to developing ORTIA Precinct 2 and the Springs Precinct, set to boost South Africa’s industrial and export capacity.
