Sesame seeds are more than just garnish; they are rich in healthy fats, protein, B vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants, and beneficial plant compounds. They help control blood sugar and ease arthritic pain, and add texture and nutty flavor to dishes. In Africa, sesame farming is growing, especially in Ethiopia, Sudan, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, and Malawi. In Ethiopia, sesame is a major export crop. Sudan’s production is centered in Gedarif state. Tensions have risen over border farming lands due to conflict. In Zimbabwe, 5,000 farmers have been trained in sesame farming. Nigeria exports sesame for significant profit, while Malawi plans to promote its cultivation for agricultural diversification.
