As of April 29, 2024, the IMF’s data highlights the 10 countries most indebted to the fund. Topping the list is Argentina, with over $32 billion owed, which is 5.3% of its GDP. This is followed by Egypt ($11B), Ukraine ($9B), Pakistan ($7B), and Ecuador ($6B). Colombia, Angola, and Kenya each owe $3 billion, while Ghana and Ivory Coast owe $2 billion each. Notably, five of these nations are in Africa, three in South America, with Ukraine being the only European country listed. The ongoing conflict with Russia has significantly impacted Ukraine’s economy. Collectively, these 10 countries account for 69% of the total $111 billion in IMF debt globally.
